Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University decided to start two cells for students — one dedicated to persons with disability (PwD) and another for equal opportunity — on its premises.
The cells are expected to start from the end of this month, with one staff and 2-3 volunteers per cell, said Vijay Khare, officiating registrar of the university.
The PwD cell will be situated on the premises of the placement cell and will be a one-stop facilitation centre to address needs of disabled students so they do not need to run around various departments on the 411-acre campus.“If a disabled student comes to the campus for any work, s/he should come directly to this cell. The staff will first guide the student and if the student needs to visit departments or the library, the volunteers will render assistance,” said Khare.
Similarly, the equal opportunity cell is aimed at guiding students, especially from disadvantaged categories, in higher education, scholarships or fellowship opportunities, employment seeking and skill development, among others. In August 2023, then collector Rajesh Deshmukh had written a letter urging colleges and research units affiliated with the SPPU to constitute an equal opportunity cell or face action.
