Noida: Two men from Uttarakhand‘s Udham Singh Nagar were nabbed on Friday night from Sector 41 for allegedly smuggling and selling around 3kg of cannabis and Rs 45-50 lakh worth of e-cigarettes, police said on Saturday.
The accused, Ahmed Ragi (31) and Taslim (45), were allegedly bringing them to Delhi-NCR from Nepal. The police have seized 960 e-cigarettes and 3.1kg of cannabis from them.
DCP Vidya Sagar Mishra said, “We acted on a tip-off that that two suspected individuals will be transporting banned items in a Swift Dzire vehicle from Nepal to Rohini, Delhi, passing through Noida on Friday evening.”
“Local police intercepted the vehicle on the Sector 41-42 crossing around 8pm and checked the vehicle. 960 e-cigarettes and 3.1 kg of cannabis were found,” added Mishra.
During interrogation, the accused told the police that the e-cigarettes were brought through an international supplier in Uttarakhand.
“The suspects bought the China-made e-cigarettes from Khatima city in Udham Singh Nagar district, near the Nepal-India border. The cannabis is from Uttarakhand too,” said Rajneesh Verma, ACP-1, Noida.
ACP Verma explained that e-cigarettes, prohibited in India since 2019, are a form of electronic nicotine delivery device powered by batteries.
“Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes do not contain dry tobacco and do not require lighting to smoke, delivering nicotine into the body. Instead, liquid nicotine is contained within a cartridge inside these devices, which activates upon inhalation. Additionally, some e-cigarettes do not emit smoke,” added Verma.
The suspects have been booked under provisions of the Prohibition of e-Cigarettes Act (PECA), the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
