CHENNAI: As many as 1,230 benches and desks made from plastic waste were donated to different schools in Chennai on Sunday.
In partnership with Way For Life NGO and ViDHAI Recycling, Sunfeast YiPPee’s Better World programme engaged approximately 2.5 lakh students in 400 schools in Chennai to collect plastic waste. About 21,600 kg of plastic waste collected as part of the programme and repurposed into 1,230 benches and desks.
Rani Meyyammai Girls Higher Secondary School in Chennai was among the recipients of these eco-friendly furnishings. A special event celebrating the official handover of 100 benches and desks made from recycled plastic waste was attended by district revenue officer S Vijaya Lakshmi, Amutha Santhanam of University of Madras, Guindy campus) and Dr Bhavna Sharma (head – nutrition science) from ITC.
