Bhubaneswar: BJD on Sunday claimed to have received over 10,000 applications from ticket aspirants for the upcoming assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
“We are glad to know that many of the ticket applicants are professionals from different fields and leaders of national parties. The receipt of huge number of applications indicates peoples unwavering trust and confidence towards Naveen Patnaik’s leadership,” BJD’s organisational secretary Pranab Prakash Das posted on ‘X’.
Das further wrote the BJD would register a historic victory with the blessings of over 4.5 crore people of the state, enabling Naveen to become chief minister for a record sixth time.
Political analysts said the barrage of applications from ticket aspirants will make BJD’s task cut out to select candidates. “It is quite natural to see a large number of aspirants vie for the ruling party’s tickets. This makes the task more difficult for BJD to shortlist candidates. The party will face an uphill task to quell dissidents and rebels,” said Niranjan Mohanty, a retired political science professor.
With elections nearing, multiple aspirants for particular seats have started taking out rallies with their supporters and holding meetings at different places in the state, including in Bhubaneswar. Even as allegations and counter-allegations by several leaders surfaced at some places, BJD said all is well in the party.
“Ours is a highly disciplined party. Naveen Patnaik is our leader. There is no dissidence anywhere,” BJD MLA (Bhubaneswar Central), Ananta Narayan Jena, said.
Congress on Sunday said selection of candidates for the party tickets has reached the final stage. “We expect to release the names of our candidates in the first week of March,” Congress’s Odisha in-charge Ajoy Kumar said.
Congress earlier said at least 3,000 people applied for party tickets through its Pragaman portal.
Senior BJP leader Samir Mohanty said the party would release names of its candidates at the right time.
