Breathing Life: End-Of-March Date For Revamp Of 20 Lakes | Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wants to complete rejuvenation of its 20 waterbodies, five decentralised sewer treatment plants (STPs) and revamp green spaces by the end of March.
All the projects have been started using funds sanctioned under the central Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2 scheme. A senior official said that, except for Naini Lake, redevelopment at other waterbodies was on.
“We started work for rejuvenating 21 waterbodies and related works over one-and-a-half years back for which an amount of Rs 47.6 crore was approved by an apex committee of the central government. We are expecting completion of 15 projects soon, while work is in progress at five places. The Naini Lake project costs around Rs 10 crore and needs approval from the standing committee, which is yet to be formed,” the official said.
The sites where work is in progress include a waterbody at Bagdola, near the malaria office in Sector-8 of Dwarka, Jahaz Wala Park in Bagdola village, Ghazipur waterbody near Highway Apartments, Amberhai in Sector-19 of Dwarka, Ghazipur village waterbody, Palam Sector-7, Aya Nagar Johad (near the bus stand), Jaunapur village, Tahirpur village, Masoodpur village, Ramphal Chowk in Sector 7 of Dwarka an Roshanara Bagh.
Earlier there was a plan to take up phase 2 of Welcome Lake Project in Shahdara from this scheme only but things could not be materialised for some reasons.
“The project for rejuvenating waterbodies aims to improve and harvest existing resources for storing rain water. Depending on requirements, we have included additional features such as trenching of the water body, chain link fencing surrounding it, developing a walkway, greening, installation of LED streetlights and construction and repair of the boundary wall as part of the project. This aims to develop these waterbodies as recreational spaces,” the official said.
At Roshanara Bagh, MCD wants to complete all tasks by mid-March. Officials said that civil work, which included making a footpath, gazebos, sitting area, boundary wall, fencing etc. is at its final stage, and by Feb-end will be finalised.
Work on the restoration of the Roshanara Bagh lake, which includes stone-pitching work on the sides and reviving the island in the middle of the waterbody, is done. By March 15, the lake will be filled with water, officials said.
In Tahirpur village, work started over a week back and the process for developing steps around the waterbody is in progress. Here also, by March-end, work is targeted to be over. At the site of the waterbodies near Highway Apartment in Ghazipur, work for cleaning the site with machines is on. “At the water body in Pochanpur in Sector 23 of Dwarka, 85% of the work is over,” an official said.
Besides, five decentralised STPs, each of 50 KLD capacity, are proposed at Divyang Park in Rathi Mill (Loni Road), Senior Citizen Park Law Apartment Karkadooma, Topiary Garden in Mayur Vihar II, a park near Highway Apartment in Ghazipur and another near Ghazipur subzi mandi.
Development of urban green recreation spaces such as Xeriscape Garden at a park near Desh Bandhu Apartments in Shahdara south, Teacher’s Prak in Nimri Colony, herbal park at Kondli, a park near Nehru Enclave in Kalkaji are other projects proposed in this scheme and work is in progress on them too.
The purpose of the AMRUT scheme, launched in 2015, is to increase the amenity value of cities by developing greenery and well-maintained open spaces, reduce pollution by switching to non-motorised transport such as cycling.
