Federation of University Teachers’ Associations of Bihar urges CM to resolve education dept-chancellor ‘tussle’ | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Expressing concern over the ongoing alleged tussle between the state education department and the chancellor of state universities over the issue of attending meetings by the university officials, the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations of Bihar (FUTAB) has urged chief minister Nitish Kumar to intervene into the matter and save the situation from any ugly turn.
FUTAB working president Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha and its general secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, pointed out that ever since the education department issued a notification on February 12 asking the vice-chancellors and other officials of all the universities in the state, the Raj Bhawan and the education department are fighting over their ‘superiority’ in academic matters.
When the registrar of Patliputra University sought a direction from the chancellor for attending the two-day residential training programme on March 2 and 3, the latter denied the permission to do so.
The chancellor also prevented the university officials from attending a review meeting scheduled for February 28.
Despite the chancellor’s order, the director of higher education issued a separate letters to the registrar of Patliputra and Purnia universities with a copy to all the universities, stating that attending meetings convened by the education department are mandatory, and necessary action would be taken against those who fail to attend them.
Taking strong exception to the director’s letters, the FUTAB leaders observed, “No director of higher education, especially a teacher, has ever used such language and terminology as the present one has done, under the pressure of higher officials.”
They said the university officials have already been attending review meeting conducted by the education department regularly. But, summoning the VCs and other senior officials for a residential training programme is unheard of in the history of higher education.
Moreover, the chancellor is supposed to be the supreme authority of the universities in a state whose orders can’t be challenged by the director of higher education, they said, adding the federation would discuss the issue at length and decide its future course of action at its next meeting to be held shortly.
