Kolkata: The city’s maximum temperature dipped two notches on Sunday due to the strengthening cold northwesterly winds for the first time since winter ended, said the Met office. The cool breeze is likely to keep the temperature down for at least the next three days, the weather-men predicted.
From 28.2°C on Saturday, the mercury dropped to 26.1°C on Sunday, five notches below the normal maximum temperature in the last week of Feb.Although the minimum temperature, at 20.9°C, was slightly above normal, the overnight resumption of northwesterly winds after over a week is likely to keep the maximum temperature between 26°C and 28°C until at least Wednesday.
“While moisture has been drying up from the Bay of Bengal, strengthening of the northwesterly winds and a cloud cover are likely to keep the temperature under control,” said RMC director G K Das.
The last temperature dip in the city was when the maximum fell from 32.1°C to 28.2°C between Wednesday and Thursday, while a thunderstorm producing 5.6 mm of rainfall was passing over the city.
IMD said central and eastern states of India may get unseasonal rainfall between Feb 23 and 27. Monday and Tuesday are likely to remain partly cloudy, with the maximum and minimum staying close to 28°C and 20°C respectively.
