Balangir: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Kalahandi couple Jayanti Mahapatra and Biren Sahu in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme for launching a unique agri-tech startup in the remote Salebhata village in the district.
In 2017, the two, who quit their high-paying corporate jobs, started a community-based goat rearing farm by involving the poor, who used to migrate to other states for employment.
“With a sense of service and dedication, they started working with local farmers and opened a goat bank here,” said Modi. The PM said farmers are given two goats for 24 months. “During this time, the goat gives birth to 9-10 kids. Of these, six are kept by the bank, and the rest are given to the same family engaged in goat farming. Today, 1,000 farmers of 50 villages are connected to this scheme,” Modi said.
Jayanti thanked the PM for recognizing and appreciating their efforts. “Me and my husband are very happy to know that the PM had spoken about our startup and praised the way it has been working to uplift the financial condition of farmers,” said Jayanti.
“We produce a diverse range of products like goat manure, milk and ghee which are sold in different parts of the country,” said Jayanti. The startup model is inspired by Dr Nambikar of Satara district in Maharashtra, she added.
