Bathinda: To evaluate the conditions of jails and address the concerns of inmates, Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) chairperson justice Sant Parkash inspected Faridkot district jail on Saturday.
The district jail houses a total of 2,337 inmates — 2,238 men, 94 women and five minor children with their mothers.
Accompanied by Faridkot DC Vinit Kumar; SSP Harjit Singh; chief judicial magistrate-cum-secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Ajitpal Singh; and jail superintendent Rajiv Arora; justice Sant Parkash engaged with the inmates and addressed their grievances.The visit included examination of the jail kitchen where the chairperson tasted the meals.
A visit to the jail hospital revealed that six tuberculosis patients were currently admitted. The question of specialist doctors was addressed, with the superintendent informing that a psychiatric doctor is stationed in the jail, and other specialists also visit as required.
Justice Parkash took note of several grievances raised by the inmates, promptly redressing some on the spot by giving directions to the officers concerned present there. TNN
