Rs 75cr Project to Protect Dibrugarh from Floods and Erosion | Guwahati News – Times of India

Dibrugarh: In a bid to shield Dibrugarh town from the perennial threat of flood and erosion by the Brahmaputra, a Rs 75-crore project was launched on Sunday.
Being undertaken under the Nabard Infrastructure Development Assistance (NIDA), the project was officially launched by local MLA Prasanta Phukan in the Mohanaghat area of Dibrugarh, where the Brahmaputra flows close to the town.
The ambitious project will involve the construction of riverbank protection along a 7km stretch using innovative technologies, two spurs along the Brahmaputra at a cost of Rs 24 crore and Rs 27 crore respectively, to divert the river’s flow and minimise the risk of erosion. Additionally, dredging and desilting will be done to ensure the smooth flow of water and to prevent sedimentation.
Speaking at the launch event, Prasanta Phukan spoke about the urgent need for riverbank protection to prevent floodwaters from wreaking havoc in the town.
“The Brahmaputra poses a significant threat to our town. People have been grappling with floods and erosion for far too long. The project represents a significant investment in the safety and security of the people, and I am confident that it will yield positive results in the long run,” the MLA said.
