MUMBAI: Over the past month, coinciding with the statewide observance of Road Safety Month, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the eastern suburbs launched a significant operation targeting traffic offenses. The mobile enforcement teams issued challans to no fewer than 40 motorists for a range of traffic violations.
Vinay Ahire, the chief of the Wadala RTO, informed the media on Monday, noting that during the crackdown on drunk driving, the mobile teams thoroughly inspected 115 intercity buses and 225 additional vehicles.Impressively, they did not encounter a single instance of drunk driving.
Regarding driving against traffic (wrong direction), the RTO apprehended 11 vehicles in four locations: Chheda Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Mankhurd, and the Sion intersection. Additionally, 22 vehicles were flagged for lacking adequate reflectors, a serious risk to road safety. The owners of these vehicles faced fines and were issued show-cause notices questioning whether their licenses or permits should remain valid.
The RTO found seven individuals driving without seatbelts and inspected 85 commercial vehicles, with a particular focus on buses, for compliance with fire safety standards. The RTO also provided educational sessions for vehicle owners on maintaining fire safety to prevent incidents on long trips.
During Road Safety Month, the RTO also spearheaded educational campaigns for drivers of auto-rickshaws and heavy vehicles who came to the RTO for their annual vehicle fitness certification. Additionally, it organized awareness workshops for school and college students, Ahire mentioned.
