Pune: A 20-year-old youth from Navi Mumbai fell into his own trap that he used to blackmail and extort Rs 6.4 lakh from a college student from Chikhali on a social media platform.
A Chikhali police team, led by assistant inspector Uddhav Khade, on Saturday arrested the suspect from Sanpada in Navi Mumbai after wooing him on the same social media platform to meet his victim in Chikhali.
As per the complaint filed by the victim’s father, his 20-year-old daughter came into contact with the youth on a social media platform last Nov. The woman shared her photographs with her social media friend. The latter posted her photograph as a display picture on his social media page.
“The suspect, last Dec, contacted the woman and told her that he needs money to avoid a police case of murder. The victim handed Rs 1 lakh,” Khade said. The officer said a few days later, the youth again contacted the victim and asked for more money. “The woman took her mother’s jewellery worth 90gm and handed it over to the man,” Khade said.
The incident came to light in Jan this year when the complainant found Rs 1 lakh and gold jewellery missing from the house. “The victim then narrated the ordeal to her parents, following which the victim’s father approached us,” Khade said.
The police then told the woman to contact the suspect again and invite him to Chikhali. “As soon as he came here, we took him into custody,” Khade said, adding, “The suspect is pursuing his studies and hails from Muzaffarpur in Bihar.”
