SWD work to be completed by Jul-Aug: CS Chennai | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: A majority of the stormwater drain work has been completed and the remaining work, in the suburbs, will be completed by July or Aug, chief secretary Shiv Das Meena has said.
In a bid to assess the progress and set targets, Meena on Saturday inspected a slew of projects including stormwater drains, roads, buildings, overbridges, parks, flood mitigation work, biomining being carried out across the city and its suburbs.
On Velachery Main Road, which was recently relaid, he had a block of bitumen brought to him and checked its thickness and density to determine the quality of road work.
Addressing reporters, Meena said storm water drain work is happening in various parts. “A majority of the SWD work is over in many places, and the remaining will be finished by Jul-Aug,” he said, referring to some of the projects by the water resources department.
“WRD is carrying out storm water drain work worth 180 crore in Gerugambakkam, Kolapakkam, Manapakkam, and Mugalivakkam. Once this is over, water from the west side and Porur Lake will go into the Adyar River, and these areas won’t flood,” he added. Along with a group of additional chief secretaries, he took stock of various ongoing civic projects worth 500 crore.
The WRD is constructing drains worth 19.16 crore in Kolapakkam, Tharmarajapuram (8.7 crore), Manapakkam canal (8.7 crore), Kolapakkam (11.7 crore), and another drain at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) for 34 crore, among others. “Highways department is also constructing storm water drains on Velachery Main Road, which was halted due to the land acquisition process. The work will be finished before the upcoming monsoon,” he added.
He later inspected the under-construction Elephant Gate railway overbridge done at a cost of 30 crore by GCC and Southern Railway. Officials said the bridge should be inaugurated this year.
The chief secretary also inspected the tuna fishing harbour work worth 200 crore in Kasimedu, other flood mitigation projects at Napier Bridge worth 70 crore, and a public toilet on Marina Loop Road. He also checked the renovation work at Tholkappier Poonga by the Chennai River Restoration Trust at 45 crore, and the bio-mining work at Perungudi landfill.
