Bhubaneswar: Casual and daily labourers like sweepers, workers who spray anti-larvae chemical, drivers and gardeners, engaged by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the BMC office demanding regularisation of their jobs.
Under the banner of Bhubaneswar Mahanagar Nigam Workers Union, the protesters also demanded annual leave, leave on all national festivals and holidays and weekly off days.
They include 670 casual (CLR) and 259 daily (DLR) labourers.
“We should get salary on a par with regular workers. BMC should deposit our EPF dues as per the order of the regional provident fund commissioner. Workers should be entitled to retirement benefits as well. BMC should introduce rehabilitation schemes for all CLR workers and provide double remuneration for working overtime. For women workers, BMC should provide maternity leave and allowances,” said general secretary of the union, Gurubari Nayak.
Representatives of the union discussed the issues with BMC officials after which they dispersed. “We listened to their grievances and what is possible as per law will be fulfilled. We have already included them under EPF,” said BMC additional commissioner Suvendu Sahu.
