LUCKNOW: A man killed his elder brother over a monetary dispute and then attempted suicide in Barabanki district on Monday. Police said the incident took place late on Sunday when the two brothers got drunk together and entered a heated argument. Rachit Kumar (19) attacked his brother Rahul Kumar (25) on the head with a stick, killing him on the spot.
Overwhelmed with remorse, Rachit then cut the veins of his wrist to end his life as well, but locals intervened, and he was rushed to hospital where he was put under arrest. The body was sent for post-mortem. Police registered a case of murder on the complaint of their father.
Barabanki ASP Chiranjeev Nath Sinha said both the victim and the accused were drunk and had fought over the money-related issue. “The family had property and Rachit thought that land properties would go to one of his unmarried sisters while the lion’s share of the property had been given to his elder brother Rahul,” said Sinha based on the interrogation of the other family members.
The victim’s younger sister, Asha Kumari, who was at her father’s place in Jahangirabad had informed police about the incident and taken her injured brother to district hospital. Police said they have recovered the stick with blood stains used in attacking Rahul. “Rachit is out of danger, and we are waiting for him to get discharged from the hospital before he is formally arrested,” said Sinha.
