The controversy arose a day after Professor Kaul was invited by the state govt to participate in a conference. However, upon her arrival, she was allegedly denied entry by airport authorities, prompting a flurry of reactions from both the party functionaries.
The Congress party criticized the denial, citing concerns over individual rights and the autonomy of state governments. Social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa emphasized the incident as a violation of state rights and urged patriotic Indians to reflect on the threats to the constitutional idea of India.
Similarly, industries minister MB Patil condemned the deportation, questioning the state of democracy in India and the BJP’s respect for constitutional values and freedom of speech. Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad raised concerns over the central govt’s interference in a state govt’s decision to invite an academic, highlighting issues of freedom of expression and participation in constitutional debates.
In contrast, the BJP criticized the Congress for inviting what they termed an “anti-India” propagandist. BJP state president BY Vijayendra condemned the Congress govt’s decision, accusing them of supporting sympathizers of the “TUKDE TUKDE GANG” and wasting funds on unnecessary expenditures.
Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, implying his sympathies towards “terror appeasers” in connection with the incident.
Former Infosys chief finance officer Mohandas Pai, echoed the sentiments of BJP leaders, justifying Professor Kaul’s deportation and suggesting she continue her activities outside of India.
Professor Nitasha Kaul, a faculty member at the University of Westminster, expressed her dismay over the incident, stating she was denied entry despite being invited as an esteemed delegate by the Congress-ruled state govt of Karnataka. She highlighted the rejection as a hindrance to discussions on democratic and constitutional values.
