Ludhiana: On a call by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, farmers took out a tractor march on the National Highway in Khanna on Monday. The farmers parked their tractors in a line about 2km long, facing towards Delhi. They also had flags of their farmer unions.
The members of the farmers union also burnt am effigy of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Rajinder Singh of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) (Rajewal) claimed that the country was being mortgaged to corporate houses and as part of that a WTO meeting is being held in Abu Dhabi from February 26-28.He demanded that the Indian govt should come out of WTO as if its decision were implemented, the entire world would be in the hands of corporates.
He added that a mahapanchayat would be held in Delhi on March 14 where farmers from all over the country would gather at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. He claimed that this would will shake the roots of the Union govt.
The farmer leader averred that the BJP would have to bear the brunt of “bullying the farmers” in the Lok Sabha elections.
Meanwhile, there were reports of farmers taking tractor rallies in Jagraon, Mullanpur and Sudhar areas.
During this, a number of farmers reached Jagraon, Nanaksar, Pandori, and Sudhar with their tractors.
A protestor said for the last several years, the farmers had been struggling for their demands, but the govt was not paying attention to then. A farm union member said among the major demands include MSP guarantee law, cancelling false cases against farmer leaders, getting the culprits of Lakhimpur Kheri punished, and crop insurance scheme, to waive off debt of farmers and farm labourers.
