Ludhiana: Working on the directions of the state government, the municipal corporation (MC) has commenced a week-long special drive to encourage home composting of waste and to discourage the residents from using banned plastic carry bags and single use plastic items.
On the first day of the drive, the MC employees sieved compost prepared in the compost pits of the civic body in different parks of the city. The compost was then distributed among the residents in parks.
A special drive was also organised in Mini Rose Garden, Kidwai Nagar, wherein the MC employees urged the residents to prepare compost out of the wet kitchen waste of their households.
As directed by MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi and joint commissioner Navneet Kaur Bal, the drive was jointly organised by the horticulture and health wing of the civic body.
Rishi said regular drives were organised to spread awareness among residents to discourage the use of banned plastic carry bags and single use plastic items.
The residents were also urged to prepare compost out of the wet household waste as this would help the civic body in solid waste management. The compost also helps in plant growth and can be used in home gardens or nearby parks. The community facilitators of MC also guide the residents regarding how to prepare the compost by visiting their door steps.
Rishi said during this week-long drive, the civic body staff would also organise drives at the material recovery facilities (MRF) situated in different parts of the city to encourage the residents to dump the plastic waste at the centres. The plastic waste is then recycled through NGOs/recyclers. The MC commissioner appealed to the residents to perform their duties toward the environment by supporting the civic body in solid waste management. tnn
