SHILLONG: State education minister Rakkam A Sangma informed the assembly on Monday that the school calendar 2025 will be notified in November. In order to implement activities under NE, schools have been instructed to allow children to attend classes without bags and take part in curricular activities on certain days, he added.
“Therefore, a suggestive list of 10 themes for ‘bag-less days‘ have been given. The schools have been given the liberty to decide the days they wish to observe as bag-less ones,” the education minister said in reply to a question from the opposition bench.
“Details of the standard operating procedure for implementing bag-less days will be added to the notification. The strategy and procedure for curating lesson plans and teaching plans will also be added to the subsequent notifications,” he said.
Further, the education minister informed that the department is also encouraging schools to take steps to ensure that they gradually move towards formative assessments as suggested by NEP. He said the education department is serious about adopting formative assessments and schools have been encouraged to make the transition to such assessments.
“The status of school education in Meghalaya needs considerable improvement as revealed by several indicators such as dropout rate, students’ knowledge gap and poor pass percentage performance,” the education minister said. “Some of the main reasons for such a scenario are weak foundational learning, limited grasp of concept, low minimum learning levels, untrained teachers, poor teaching practices and assessment strategies”, the education minister said.
