Southern Railway to Redevelop 34 Stations in Tamil Nadu | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: Southern Railway will kick off redevelopment of 34 railway stations across the state, including six suburban railway stations in Chennai, and start construction of 193 foot overbridges at stations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the work via video conferencing on Monday.
The railways had arranged ceremonial functions at almost all stations where railway staff, residents and schoolchildren viewed the inaugural function broadcast from Delhi.Redevelopment work was launched at St Thomas Mount, Mambalam, Beach, Park, Ambattur, Guindy and Mambalam stations. Other stations being redeveloped are Mettupalayam, Coimbatore North, Erode, Morappur, Dindigul, Tuticorin, Tiruchendur, Mayiladuturai, Kumbakonam and Vriddhachalam, to name a few.
Speaking at one such programme at St Thomas Mount station, Governor R N Ravi said the station redevelopment is part of the process to upgrade railway infrastructure in the state.
“In Tamil Nadu, the railways has more than 45,000 crore of projects underway,” he added. “Our digital infrastructure is an example to the world,” Ravi said.
Union minister L Murugan took part in the function held at Mettupalayam railway station. In Trichy, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for the redevelopment of four stations, seven road overbridges (ROBs) and 26 underpasses in the Trichy railway division through video conferencing.
He laid the foundation for the redevelopment of Tiruvarur, Kumbakonam, Tiruvannamalai, and Virudhachalam stations to be carried out at an estimated 146.13 crore. The seven ROBs are expected to cost 224 crore. Modi also inaugurated 26 underpasses which were completed at 91.11 crore.
In Madurai, 13 stations will be redeveloped and work will begin to build road overbridges replacing level crossings in Sholavandan near Madurai and the road overbridge at Rajapalayam.
The 13 stations that will be redeveloped in Madurai division of the zone are Palani, Tiruchendur, Ambasamudram, Karaikudi, Kovilpatti, Manaparai, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Rajapalayam, Paramakudi, Dindigul, Tuticorin and Tirunelveli. Tirunelveli junction will be redeveloped for 270 crore.
In Tamil Nadu, work at 77 railway stations is being taken up under the Union govt’s ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at a n estimated cost of more than 4,100 crore. Of these, phase-1 work is in progress at 18 stations, for which the foundation was laid by the Prime Minister in Aug 2023.

The redevelopment will include stations in Simhachalam, Andhra Ooti Araku, Parvathipuram, Bobbili, Kottavalasa, Chipurupalle, Srikakulam Road, Naupada, Parlakehmundi, Jepore, Rayagada, and Koraput in the Odisha region.
