Coimbatore: A 23-year-old woman and her paramour were arrested on Thursday for assaulting an elderly woman and robbing her.
Those arrested were identified as Nathiya alias Narmatha, 23, from Gudalur in the Nilgiris and her paramour T Vigneshwaran, 28, of Kalappatti in the city.
Police said Nathiya had developed an extramarital affair with Vigneshwaran, after which her husband separated from her a few months ago.Nathiya and Vigneshwaran who started living together decided to get involved in robbery as they were facing financial crisis.
Around 2pm, S Nanjammal, 80, of Old Post Office Street in Kalapatti was sitting on a chair in front of her house, when Vigneshwaran who was wearing a helmet suddenly assaulted her on her head with a masher. He then robbed her of 2.75 sovereign gold chain and managed to escape with Nathiya who was waiting outside the house. Nanjammal suffered bleeding injuries and was rushed to a private hospital.
Locals who checked the CCTV camera footage located the duo hiding at least four houses away from the victim’s house and alerted the police. Kovilpalayam police arrested the two and recovered the stolen chain. They were subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
