The Catrina is represented by the image of a skeleton dressed in a feathered hat in the European fashion of the 19th century.
Its original name, Calavera Garbancera, comes from the designation of the people who sold chickpeas, and who, despite having indigenous blood, pretended to be Europeans, denying their race and cultural heritage: “in the bones, but wearing a French hat with ostrich feathers ”.
Today, the Catrina is part of the popular culture of Mexico and has become the quintessential symbol of the Day of the Dead celebration.
