Evans Mother of Pearl and Gold Makeup Compact - 1940's-50's Antique Clutch
What a beauty! This Evans silver tone wristlet handbag with a rhinestone embellished mother-of-pearl inlaid top has two gold tone compartments for everything from a powder compact to a coin carrier. The Evans Co. can trace it's roots back to early American button makers and in the early 1900's wisely saw an opportunity to branch out into compact vanity cases. Over the years, the cases became more than utilitarian which eventually led to compacts which could also perform double duty as evening bags. This beauty pops open on one side to reveal a mirror, powder compartment, a comb with sleeve, a spring loaded coin carrier, sleeve for lipstick and an open compartment possibly for cash. The second compartment was probably used for cigarettes with a hinged bar to keep everything in place.
This beautiful antique clutch brandishes a still-vibrant tone of gold, accented with a deeply iridescent mother of pearl casing. This clutch was originally intended for one side to hold powder, lipstick, and other small accessories, while the other side would potentially hold cigarettes, and loose cash or change.
There is minimal to no wear on this piece, with every tile and piece intact. There is a small lipstick residue remaining in the lipstick storage cavity, which could easily be cleaned with the orders right, delicate materials.
This is a timeless piece that was lauded for in the mid 19th century, and to find one in such sterling condition was jolting!
