COIMBATORE: The rural police are planning to install warning systems along the Bhavani river at Mettupalayam and Sirumugai areas to alarm the general public about sudden increase in inflow and caution them not to venture into the river to ensure their safety.
Pointing out that more than 50 people had drowned in the river in the past three years, district superintendent of police (SP) V Badrinarayanan said they had identified 19 places at Mettupalayam and Sirumugai areas, where people usually take bath in the Bhavani river, to install the warning systems.
“A private firm has carried out a study at these 19 vital places recently. Specialised warning systems will be installed there very soon. Whenever the water level in the river goes up, the warning system will trigger a siren, upon which people bathing in the river should walk out of the water to save their lives. We hope this initiative will help save many lives in future,” the SP said.
Earlier this year, the rural police had deployed lifeguards at the river after two ITI students and three women were washed away in two separate incidents near Mettupalayam and Sirumugai in February.
“While the local residents are familiar with the river and stay away whenever the inflow increases suddenly after the release of water from the check dam at Samayapuram, that’s not the case with the outsiders. After the formation of the lifeguard unit, we have rescued more than 100 people from the river and prevented several others from taking bath when the inflow was high,” Badrinarayanan said.
He said the unit had been functioning very well. “We are planning to procure fibre boats and other safety equipment for the unit. The lifeguards will be given a uniform soon.”
The SP said the lifeguards were trained under the National Disaster Response Force and creating awareness among the public on the need to stay away from the river when the inflow was high. “Presently, they are equipped with life jackets, ropes, lifebuoy, headlights and torch lights to rescue the people trapped in the river.”

Assi river to be cleaned through ozonisation tech
A Bhoomi Pujan ceremony was held at Assi Ghat in Varanasi to clean the Assi river using ozonisation technology. The project, executed by ORAIPL in collaboration with Right Water Solutions Pvt Ltd, will be completed in 90 days. ORAIPL is also involved in wastewater treatment projects in Kunda, Prayagraj, under the National Mission for Clean Ganga. The Assi river carries an average flow of 80 MLD wastewater, with 50 MLD going to the Ramana sewage treatment plant and the remaining 30 MLD directly entering the Ganga. Ozonisation technology is hygienic, environmentally friendly, and does not contribute to TDS escalation.
