Chennai: Recognizing the rapid growth of Chennai’s suburbs and the need for focused attention, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco) has revamped its operational and management circle boundaries. This strategic move aligns with corporation and revenue districts, aiming for efficient management and improved service delivery.
Ten new distribution divisions have been formed across the state, including a trifurcation of the Tambaram division in Chennai, officials said.
Three chief engineers (CE) will now be solely responsible for the Chennai Corporation area, ensuring dedicated attention to its specific needs. Northern suburbs and Avadi Corporation will fall under the newly created superintendent engineer (SE) post for the Tiruvallur district. This SE will report to the CE of Kancheepuram. The existing Chennai West circle will be dissolved. Ambattur will be integrated into the SE Chennai North area and Anna Nagar into SE Chennai South.
Previously, the north and central Chennai corporation areas, along with Ponneri and Avadi, were managed by the chief engineer (north). “This broad scope hampered the focus on individual areas within the city,” a senior official said. Similarly, Adyar and Taramani, overseen by the chief engineer of Kancheepuram, who also managed areas up to Tiruvallur, faced challenges.
This restructuring aims to optimize manpower allocation and provide focused attention to rapidly developing areas such as Tiruvallur, where industrial growth necessitates responsive service delivery, officials said.
Tangedco plans to further streamline its distribution regions by merging Karur with Erode and Tiruvannamalai with Villupuram, reducing the total number of regions from 12 to 10. This follows the creation of these new regions by former energy minister Senthil Balaji.
