Gandhinagar: State government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel said that the interest of Gujarat and its people will be considered before the government takes any decision on relaxing prohibition in other places of the state, like the concessions granted to GIFT City.
In reply to a question on whether the government proposes to relax prohibition in other places, Patel said in Gandhinagar on Thursday, “If you are referring to places like Dhordo, Saputara, Statue of Unity… at the right time, and considering the necessities, the state government will take a decision keeping in mind the interests of Gujarat and its people.”
Patel said that the decision on relaxing prohibition in GIFT City limits was taken keeping in mind the lifestyle of those who are or will be working there, many of whom will be from other countries.
While Patel mentioned the names of Dhordo, Saputara and the Statue of Unity (SoU), top sources in the state government said that the government is considering a proposal to relax prohibition in “non-religious tourist attractions which have sizable number of foreign and Indian tourists”.
Sources said that “prohibition could be relaxed at places where beach tourism is being promoted, at the Rannotsav, along with the Surat Diamond Bourse and other major non-religious tourist places which have been witnessing high tourist footfall”.
Last week, and just days before next month’s Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS), the Gujarat government announced a relaxation of prohibition in GIFT City at Gandhinagar, a global nerve-centre for new age financial and technology services.
The decision will allow all employees and officials of GIFT City, as well as visitors, access to liquor, the state government said in a statement last week, adding that the decision to relax liquor laws has been done to provide a “global business ecosystem” in GIFT City.
