Ahmedabad: The vice-president of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, will attend the 72nd annual convocation function of Gujarat University as the chief guest on January 19. Sources said that about 52,000 students will be conferred degrees during the convocation.
According to sources, earlier, the convocation was scheduled on January 13 and invitations were sent to the state governor Acharya Devvrat and vice-president of India Jagdeep Dhankhar. However, as the governor was busy on January 13 the convocation had to be rescheduled to January 19. This will be the first annual convocation after the university got its first woman vice chancellor Neerja Gupta.
Sources said that all the faculty deans’ positions in the university have been vacant for about a year .
According to sources, the university delayed the appointment of deans and then later the government implemented the Gujarat Public Universities Act 2023 which needed to dissolve all the committees and rules of deans’ appointments were also changed.
According to the rules, deans of various facilities seek permission from the governor and the vice chancellor for conferring degrees at the convocation.
However, as there are no deans in any of the faculties the vice chancellor will have to perform this task at the convocation ceremony.
