Ahmedabad: Trainees pursuing post-MBBS diploma courses at GMERS Valsad College have threatened to launch an agitation and boycott duties if the recovery order for an additional stipend paid over the past three months is not withdrawn by the college.
The National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) recently wrote to the Union ministry of health and family welfare, urging GMERS Valsad to align the stipends for the first- and second-year trainees with those fixed for MD, MS, and DNB students.
Despite NBEMS instructions, sources indicate that the college has paid a lower stipend amount to post-MBBS diploma students. The Gujarat health department, in 2021, had set the stipend for the trainees at Rs 63,000-Rs 68,000 per month, while MD, MS, and DNB students received Rs 84,000-Rs 85,400 per month.
In 2022, NBEMS advised the department to standardize the stipends. For the past three months, the college paid diploma trainees the same amount as MD, MS, and DNB trainees. However, this month, the administration withheld stipends and issued a recovery order for the additional amount, prompting protests from the diploma trainees. They threaten to boycott duties if the recovery order is not withdrawn within two days.
Dr Yogesh Goswami, CEO of GMERS, mentioned that the dean may not have been aware of state rules. He said a meeting with the dean is scheduled to address the issue.TNN
