Highest 20% UG girls get into PG in Gujarat | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: The ratio of girl students in postgraduate (PG) courses in Gujarat in the year 2021-22 to the undergraduate (UG) girls was 20% – for 5.92 lakh girls in UG courses, there were 1.18 lakh girls in PG courses. It was the highest ratio of enrolment in PG for the girls in the past five years, indicated recently released All-India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for 2021-22 by the Union ministry of education. The ratio was 16% in 2017-18, indicated the past survey.
In comparison, the ratio for boys was 12.6% – against 7.75 lakh boys in graduation courses, 97,560 opted for PG degrees. Thus, at PG level, the share of girl students was 55% in 2021-22 compared to their share in UG courses at 43%. At doctoral studies (PhD) level, the girl students’ participation again dipped at 44%. The survey results also indicated that the gender ratio – share of girls compared to boys – has improved from 86% to 90% in five years from 2017-18 to 2021-22.
Prof S S Manoharan, director general of Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), said the trend is in line with the steady rise of girl students at all levels in academics in the past few years.
“It can be seen in both the perspective of government initiatives such as reservation and fee waiver for girls, along with rise in interest in higher studies by the girl students. While the share of girl students in arts and liberal studies courses has been more than 50% for a long time, in the past couple of years, the number of girls in engineering courses has also increased by 4-5%,” he said.
Prof Rajul Gajjar, vice-chancellor of Gujarat Technological University (GTU), said the data can be seen in the light that the boys often opt for jobs or vocational courses after their graduation. “Girls often opt for further studies. In the past few years, we have seen overall rise in girl students. Stress on girl education in the state is also a factor,” she said.
State added 162 colleges, highest in country
A Gandhinagar-based academician added that competitive exams often have graduation as qualification, and many prepare for it, whereas technical courses such as engineering have lucrative employment opportunities right after graduation. “In such fields, we do see a sharp drop in overall numbers from UG to PG,” added the academician.
The AISHE also indicated that Gujarat added highest 162 colleges in 2021-22, followed by 144 in Maharashtra and 137 in Rajasthan.
Out of 162, 147 or 91% were private colleges. According to the survey, 5.12 lakh or 40% of the 12.74 lakh students were studying in privately-run universities and colleges.
In comparison, 3.14 lakh or 24% students were in government-run institutions. The rest were in private institutions funded by the state or central governments.
