Ahmedabad: In a response to a question by Rajya Sabha member Parimal Nathwani, Som Prakash, Union MoS (commerce and industry) said the number of recognized startups in Gujarat increased from 565 in 2019 to 3,291 in 2023. This also led to an increase in direct employment opportunities, from 6,077 to 48,138 in the same period.
According to the minister, in 2019 a total of 10,604 startups were recognized in India by the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT), which jumped to 34,779 in 2023.Simultaneously, direct employment opportunities created by these startups across India saw a substantial increase, rising from 1,23,071 jobs in 2019 to 3,90,512 jobs in 2023.
Nathwani had asked for the number of startups recognized under the Startup India initiative, the number of jobs provided, and the number of startups led by women, among other details.
According to the minister’s statement, the DPIIT recognised 1,17,254 as of December 31, 2023. These recognized startups are reported to have created over 12.42 lakh direct jobs creating a significant economic impact. There is at least one recognized startup in every state and Union territory (UT) spread across over 80% of the districts of the country, the reply said.
