Ahmedabad: A city sessions court on Monday denied regular bail to a postal agent of Shastrinagar police office, Darshana Bhatt, who along with others is accused of duping small investors out of Rs 4 crore.
Bhatt and two other postal agents — Tejas Shah and his wife Gira Shah — were booked last month for cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy based on a complaint by Hemant Hukmani, a resident of Naranpura. He complained to Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) that he and his family members had a joint savings account in the Shastrinagar post office since 2010.
His father and uncle had another joint account in the same post office.
Their savings were managed and invested in various schemes by these three postal agents. He alleged that in Oct 2023, the agents forged the signatures of his family members, opened different bank accounts and withdrew Rs 27.75 lakh.
Seeking bail, Bhatt claimed innocence and argued that all documents pertaining to the probe are with the police.
Opposing her bail plea, public prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt submitted that most of the victims of the scam are senior citizens. The accused allegedly cheated them out of Rs 3.97 crore.
Additional sessions judge J M Brahmbhatt rejected the bail plea saying that releasing the accused on bail could jeopardize the investigation, as the possibility of the accused influencing witnesses cannot be denied.
