Gandhinagar: In a major crackdown on milk adulteration, a team from the Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) destroyed approximately 10,000 litres of adulterated milk worth Rs 4.17 lakh in Palanpur and Gandhinagar. FDCA commissioner HG Koshia said that his team received a tip-off about a tanker carrying adulterated milk in Palanpur in Banaskantha.
The collected samples were inspected in FDCA’s mobile inspection van. “It was found that the milk in the tanker was adulterated with maltodextrin powder. The tanker was on its way to Sadhi Milk Products in Palanpur when it was intercepted,” said Koshia. Additionally, 307kg of cheese and paneer worth Rs 83,000, suspected to be spurious, has been seized.
An FDCA press release states that in the presence of the dairy owner, Laxman Modi, 11 samples of milk were collected. Around 4,700 litres of milk worth Rs 1.68 lakh was destroyed on the spot. The batch belonged to Gamdiwala Milk Processor in Gandhinagar. FDCA’s Gandhinagar team raided the unit and found traces of maltodextrin powder in the milk stored at the premises.
“One of the samples tested positive for maltodextrin powder. A stock of 5,000 litres of milk worth Rs 2.5 lakh was destroyed at the unit,” said Koshia. Two samples of paneer and a sample of cheese were also collected from the unit. He said that a segregation report for the food samples is awaited after which criminal action will be taken against the accused.
