Ahmedabad: Justice J C Doshi of the Gujarat high court on Monday expressed anguish that if he discloses his mind about any matter, he gets browbeaten by lawyers in some cases.
The judge commented so when he was to pronounce his verdict on two anticipatory bail pleas filed by former IAS officer S K Langa regarding criminal complaints for alleged irregularities in land transactions when he was the district collector in Gandhinagar. He is already behind bars in an alleged case of corruption relating to a land transaction in Gandhinagar.
When Justice Doshi almost pronounced his decision that he was dismissing Langa’s applications, advocates sought to withdraw the pleas. A lawyer submitted that the dismissal will have long-lasting repercussions in this matter. He submitted that had the court said earlier it was not inclined to entertain the pleas, they could have requested withdrawal. To this, Justice Doshi said, “I cannot say that I am not inclined. It has different repercussion…then browbeating begins.”
The judge said he had penned 20 pages of judgment and will mention at the end that a request for withdrawal was made. However, as the lawyers continued to request, the judge said, “I am not here to fight with persons (lawyers) or hear their sarcastic (remarks).” The judge added, “In many other cases I faced this. When I am disclosing my mind, sometimes I get browbeating from many members of the bar. Everyone is a witness here.”
